Saliva Iodine Concentration in Children and Its Association with Iodine Status and Thyroid Function

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism|July 23, 2020

Saliva is good for measuring iodine

Iodine deficiency has traditionally been assessed by measuring iodine losses in urine.  This is a cumbersome process, and almost impossible to do in young children and infants.

ONH proposed using saliva as the site for measuring iodine deficiency.  Saliva is easily collected even in children.  The salivary gland stores iodine and this iodine is readily released into saliva.

A recent article confirms that saliva is a reliable source of iodine and is equivalent to urine for predicting iodine intake.
