Who We Are
Linda is a physician with a deep commitment to finding new approaches to addressing the problem of micronutrient deficiencies. Micronutrient deficiencies are common throughout the world, and are a leading cause of poor health; from diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Micronutrient deficiencies can be difficult to see, especially if caloric intake is plentiful (called hidden hunger). These deficiencies are ingrained into the food system. The first step in addressing micronutrient deficiencies is recognizing them.
Her first encounter with this was with iodine deficiency. Cretinism is a devastating disorder caused by iodine deficiency and life long hypothyroidism. In the US we have iodine added to table salt but this is not a guarantee that a person will get enough iodine. It is a bigger problem in many developing countries with both low iodine, selenium, and high goitrogen compounds in their diets.
Linda did a master’s degree in nutrition before going to medical school and then doing advanced training in endocrinology. She is working on a point of care testing device to identify certain micronutrient deficiencies including iodine deficiency.
Point of Care testing
Linda has developed a device for testing iodine levels in a person’s saliva. This can be used to get a quick measure of iodine sufficiency even far from a lab.
Micronutrient Gardens
Linda has formulated a micronutrient garden system that is small enough to grow in a window and provides many micronutrients.
Sustainable Living
Linda has a passion for sustainable living to help preserve all of us including the planet for a long future.
